Neurology is a branch in medicine that diagnosis and remedies nervous system disorders. It is concerned with the treatment of diseases that involve the central, autonomic and peripheral nervous systems. A surgeon who performs neurological surgeries is called a neurosurgeon.
Neurology is different from neuroscience which studies the nervous system scientifically. Neurological disorders are caused due to biochemical, electrical and structural abnormalities in the brain resulting in a variety of symptoms. Common neurological disorders are stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, tremor, sleep disorders, brain/spinal cord injuries, etc.
These disorders are diagonalized through a neurological exam and then treated as the case demands. Neurological disorders can be prevented to an extent through medication, physiotherapy, neurorehabilitation, lifestyle changes, pain management, or operations that are performed by a neurosurgeon.
Many of the fundamental mechanisms of the brain have been unfolded in recent years. As a result of the medical breakthroughs consequently achieved, treatments have been evolved for many neurological disorders.
Neurosurgeons perform operations such as clipping cerebral aneurisms, managing traumatic head injury, treating congenital neurological abnormalities, removing brain tumors and the management of spinal conditions, etc.
