Eye Surgery (Ophthalmology) Treatments

When surgery is performed on the eye, it is called an eye surgery. Eye surgeries are performed by eye specialists called ophthalmologists. The eye is one of the most sensitive parts of the body and any eye surgery requires extreme care during the surgery and after it has been performed.

There are many eye conditions that require eye care and surgery. Some of them are cataracts, glaucoma and refractive surgery.

When the crystalline lens of the eyes develop cloudiness due to disease, aging, or trauma, it prevents the formation of a clear image in the retina. This condition is called cataract. The cloudy lens may be removed in case of significant vision loss and replaced by synthetic lens.

Glaucoma results when the optic nerve is affected and there is significant intraocular pressure. Here, excess aqueous humor is drained to lessen the intraocular pressure.

The aim of refractive surgery is to correct refraction errors by eliminating or reducing the need for prescription glasses. This is also called as laser eye surgery or LASIK laser. The cost of eye surgery can be prohibitive in the west. Therefore many people visit eye centers in countries like India, Thailand and Singapore to get treatment.
