Bariatric Surgery (Weight Loss Surgery) Treatments

Obesity is a universal problem. If someone is obese it means that person has too much body fat. An obese person should worry since obesity can reduce his or her life expectancy and lead to other health problems. Obesity increase the chances of getting various diseases such as obstructive sleep apnea, heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers, asthma, and osteoarthritis.

Obesity is usually caused by a variety of factors such as excessive food intake, genetic susceptibility and little or no exercise. Obesity can also be caused by endocrine disorders, genetic disorders, psychiatric illness or medications. Obesity can be contained by physical exercise and dieting. But some times, if the BMI is greater than 40 kg per meter square, then Bariatric surgery or weight loss surgery should be considered.

Obesity surgery can also be used to loose weight if diet and exercise programs have failed to control weight. People having conditions that don't allow fasting diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and glucose intolerance are also candidates for Bariatric surgery.

Weight loss by surgery can be achieved by using an implanted medical device to reduce the stomach size. Bariatric surgeons may also remove a part of the stomach, or reroute the small intestines to a small pouch in the stomach. This is called gastric bypass surgery.
