Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is the process in which a single sperm is gently injected into a single egg for fertilization. Both the sperm and the egg are collected from the donors and several eggs are treated in the same manner. They are kept in special culture fluids that encourage growth. The healthiest embryos or blastocysts after the period of 2-3 days and 5-6 days respectively are then planted in the uterus of the woman. ICSI is very similar to the process of in vitro fertilization (IVF),

Couples facing the following fertility problems are prescribed to undergo this procedure:
   • Low number of sperms in the semen – in this case the egg does not have a good chance of getting fertilized. In case of complete absence of sperms in semen, a sample can be collected from the test through various sperm retrieval methods.
   • Problems with ejaculation – retrograde ejaculation makes the semen drain into the bladder instead of outside through the penis. Sperms can be collected from the urine sample in such cases, or even from the testes.
   • Abnormal sperm mobility – in such cases the sperms are unable to travel up to the egg for fertilization. An ejaculated semen sample is enough for the collection of sperms.
   • Vasectomy that is permanent.
   • Men who have to undergo cancer treatment – sperm samples are collected before the treatment and frozen. They are thawed for fertilization at the right time.

In the USA a single cycle of ICSI treatment could cost anywhere between $10,000 and $17,000; in contrast, the same treatment in a medical tourism destination like India would only cost approximately $1,200. This translates into a savings of nearly 70 to 80 percent. Similarly, patients could save up to 75 percent when they opt to undergo the same treatment in a country such as Thailand. Other popular medical tourism destinations that offer affordable ICSI treatment options include Japan, Singapore, Greece, Turkey, China, Brazil, and Philippines
