Embryo Freezing or “Embryo Cryopreservation” is the process of storing embryos or fertilized eggs in sub-zero temperatures. Embryos between the fertilization and the blastocyst stages; that is, before implantation, can be stored using this method. Thousands of embryo transfers are done annually around the world. This procedure generally accompanies IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) treatments where extra embryos and eggs are frozen for future use. Patients can use these embryos if IVF cycles fail or for the next pregnancy. Liquid nitrogen is used to freeze the embryos and they are then stored in computerized storage units which have the best back-up technologies. The two types of embryo freezing are – slow programmable freezing and vitrification. Embryos stored this way can last for years. In the event the woman becomes pregnant, the syndrome is often much more serious and lasts longer. After your surgery After your surgery On the day of embryo transfer, the woman may start a course of pessaries to support the luteal phase. Post Operative Care Post Operative Care If the embryos are stored for a long time, the IVF clinic may contact the patient about the future of the embryos. They may be asked if they want to: • Continue storage for a further period of time. • Arrange for embryo transfer treatment cycle before the expiry date. • Allow embryos to perish by interfering with the thawing process. • Donate embryos to ethically approved research. • Donate embryos to infertile couple.
