The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons declared that the US performed over 1 million plastic surgery procedures in 2011. Brazil, China, and Japan also performed top numbers of cosmetic surgeries.

Heart Valve Replacement Surgery

Heart valve replacement surgery replaces diseased heart valves. There are four valves in the heart, the aortic valve, the mitral valve, the tricuspid valve and the pulmonary valve. Blood that flows through the heart must flow through different chambers. When the heart pumps blood, these valves open to let blood through and close to prevent back-flow. Three kinds of heart valve replacement procedures are performed.

  • Mechanical valves made of man made materials such as ceramic or steel. These valves last the longest, but patients will have to take blood thinning medication such as aspirin for the rest of their lives.
  • Biological valves will last for 12-15 years. These are made of animal or human tissue. Here, patients don't have to take any blood thinning medication.
  • In some cases, the patient's own pulmonary valve may be used to replace the aortic valve. The pulmonary valve is then replaced with an artificial valve. It is an option for those who don't want to take blood thinners.
