Growth of Worldwide Medical Tourism Market

The worldwide medical tourism market is estimately growing at a rate of 25-35% annually. The high cost of health care and long wait times for some procedures still remain the major factors for growth.

Medical Tourism Destinations

Medical tourism destinations abroad have become popular on account of a number of reasons. With the costs associated with medical treatment becoming more prohibitive by the day, many patients are seeking healthcare abroad.

At major hospitals in popular destinations such as Thailand, Singapore, India, Malaysia, South Korea, Philippines, Mexico and Brazil, healthcare is very advanced. It is on par with the treatment quality you can avail in countries like the US, Europe or Australia. Clinics, hospitals and healthcare centers aboard have access to the same advanced technologies that you would find in many developed countries.

To press the case, take this example: A bypass surgery on the coronary artery will leave you poorer by $70,000-133,000 in the US, whereas in India it will cost you approximately $7,500. This number is only an estimate, but notice the vast difference in the costs between the two countries.

Other advantages of seeking medical treatment abroad are - the short or no wait times for certain procedures and access to the latest technologies/facilities. In these countries English is widely spoken, so it is nearly certain that you will not encounter any language barriers. If you are still not comfortable, translator services are available in many of the major hospitals. Further, if your condition permits and you have the permission of your doctor, take advantage of your stay to tour the country and visit tourism hotspots.
