Americans Would Rather Travel Than Pay High Costs

Affordable, quality care apparently trumps the commitment to travel. Approximately 50 million uninsured Americans are choosing medical tourism rather than pay for medical care in the US.

Barbados Medical Tourism

Barbados is the easternmost Caribbean island with the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Caribbean Sea to the west. It is an independent and democratic country that has been influenced by both British and African cultures due to its location and history. Barbados was accepted in the realm of developed nations by the United Nations in 2011, with the Human Development Index of 0.793.

Tourism is one of the major industries in the country and contributes approximately 25 percent of the nation's GDP. Vast stretches of white sand beaches, perennial sunshine, exquisite scenery and clear waters make Barbados an irresistible attraction for people from all over the world. The government here is investing effort and money in the development of medical tourism, which is a natural offshoot of the already thriving tourism industry.

Barbados is increasingly being recognized as a medical tourism destination with the most developed and advanced medical infrastructure and technology in all of Eastern Caribbean. It boasts of having a dialysis center, provisions for open-heart surgeries and decompression chambers among other facilities. The official language of the country being English, all the doctors and medical professionals working at both the public and private hospitals and clinics speak in English. Some of the most popular treatments Barbados is famous for include fertility treatments, geriatric care, holistic and alternative treatments, bariatric surgery, dental treatments and cardiology/heart surgeries. For example, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, a 600 bed public hospital located in Bridgetown, is currently the biggest and the most comprehensive facility in the country and offers all these treatments. Another popular clinic is the Barbados Fertility Clinic, a privately run Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited clinic for fertility treatment that has been attracting medical tourists for almost a decade now.
