How to Conceive a Boy

17 April 2015

Gender selection allows couples to predetermine the gender of the baby. Statistics reveal that there are about 100 girls born for every 105 boys. The aspiring mother carries two X chromosomes, while the aspiring father carries and an X and a Y chromosome. Due to this, the male usually decides the child's gender. The gender of the baby is set as male when the spermatozoa containing a Y chromosome penetrates effectively into the egg. There have been various methods and techniques that are believed to favor the conception of babies of a certain gender. While some of them are hearsay, others are supported by research studies which say that these methods may increase the odds of conceiving babies of a particular gender. Then again, there are also advanced medical techniques that allow couples to effectively choose the gender of their baby.

The Shettles Method

Timing your intercourse close to your ovulation date can increase the odds of conceiving a boy, according to this method. Male sperms are fast and small but fragile. Due to this they have a tendency of coming in contact with the egg much faster than female sperms. By timing intercourse around the ovulation period, there are better odds of the sperms reaching the eggs immediately, without an intermediary waiting period during which the male sperms may die.

It is advised that you keep track of the consistency of the cervical mucus everyday in the month leading up to conception. The mucus should take a watery and elastic disposition during ovulation, which is recommended as the most-suitable time for intercourse to conceive a boy. Women can even use ovulation testing kits which can be bought online or at pharmacies to detect when the luteinizing hormone (LH) is released by the body, as it usually occurs just before ovulation. According to this method, it is recommended that women test twice each day in the 11 am - 3 pm and 5 pm - 10 pm time slot for the two tests.

Diet

Acidic conditions are harmful for sperms that are likely to support the conception of a male offspring. This has given rise to beliefs that alkaline diets may help conceive a boy. Some recommend to increase the potassium and sodium intake to conceive a boy. Avocados, pine nuts, almonds, cherries, sprouts, wheatgrass and bread are some foods that favor the birth of a male offspring. Some researchers suggest that Evening Primrose supplements increase the odds of conceiving boys. As for aspiring dads, having caffeinated beverages before intercourse is said to stimulate Y-sperms and make them more active. If you're keen on conceiving a boy, some foods that you may want to avoid are dairy foods like ice-cream, yoghurt, cheese and milk, citrus fruits and juices, and spicy foods with vinegar.

IVF technique

Many couples that want to be sure of conceiving a baby of a particular gender are opting for in-vitro fertilization. In this process, the sperm and egg are fertilized outside the body in a laboratory, and then implanted. This offers a guaranteed way of predetermining the baby's gender prior to conception. However, the technique can be highly expensive. Its expensive prices are driven by the complexity of the procedure. The process can cost over $20,000 in the US. The high costs have made couples consider alternate affordable destinations like Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, Greece and India for IVF treatments. Not only do these locations give them access to fertility clinics, but they also result in huge cost-savings owing to the affordability of medical care.
