Fertility Diet: 4 Foods to Boost Your Fertility

It is difficult to accurately estimate the global infertility rates as it takes into consideration both female and male issues. However, an analysis of responses from females in Demographic and Health Surveys in 1990 came to a closure with the participation of WHO in the year 2004. It revealed that 1 out of every 4 couples was struggling with the issue of infertility in developing nations.

Your reproductive cycle could be hampered because of excess or less weight. It essentially affects your ovulation, which may become irregular or may not happen at all.

The estrogen level in your body is regulated by the fat cells and the ovaries, which in turn affects the ovulation process. So if you’re underweight, your body might not be able to produce sufficient amounts of estrogen. On the other hand, if you carry extra body weight or are obese, your body may produce excess estrogen. Both the conditions are not favorable for reproduction.

So first and foremost, it is vital to have a healthy body weight for a balanced reproductive cycle. It involves checking your Body Mass Index score. A healthy body weight falls in a BMI range of 19-24. You need to consult a health care professional if your body weight is above or below this specified range.

Foods to boost fertility


For some people, weight is not an issue but they continue to experience infertility problems. In such cases, making changes to the diet can improve the chances of getting pregnant. A recent study at Harvard found that those women who consumed foods in high trans-fats, carbohydrates and animal protein stood at a higher risk of an ovarian disorder. The researchers involved in the study revealed that ovulation problems, which lead to infertility can be prevented to a large extent with the adjustment of the daily diet and lifestyle. Noting that small dietary changes can make a huge difference in the ability to conceive for a majority of women.

Below are some important foods that women must incorporate in their diet to boost fertility:

1. Good protein sources

Eliminate excess of beef and pork from your diet. Try and replace it with more of vegetable protein such as nuts, lentils and beans. There can be a significant drop (almost 50 percent) in ovulatory infertility if 5 percent of your total calories come from vegetable protein sources rather animal sources.

2. High-fat dairy

Fertility experts say that greater the amount of low-fat dairy consumed by you, the higher is the risk of ovarian infertility. Rather than taking several helpings of low-fat dairy each day, replace them with one high-fat serving like a cup of whole milk.

3. Vitamins

Another study showed that regular intake of vitamins such as multivitamins, which contain folic acid and iron supplements by a group of women led to decreased fertility issues.

4. Dark green and leafy Vegetables

There is no doubt that vegetables and fruits are high in various kinds of vitamins and minerals-iron, calcium, zinc as well as magnesium and must be a part of the fertility boosting diet. Broccoli is one such green vegetable, which should be consumed by women looking to conceive. It is rich in antioxidants and contains high amounts of phytosterols, which help in the functioning of the hormone system.
