What is IVF?

18 July 2014

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a viable option for couples ridden by infertility issues. While it isn't necessarily one of the first steps to look at to treat infertility, it is resorted to in cases artificial insemination, fertility drugs and surgery have not been successful.

During an IVF process, the sperm and eggs are combined in a culture dish. Once they fertilize into embryos, they are transferred to the uterus where they develop further. About 5 percent of couples who have infertility issues seek IVF treatments. Understanding the IVF process, chances at achieving pregnancy, and the cost-bearing of the treatment can equip you information that you can weigh whether or not an IVF treatment is suitable for you.

How is an IVF carried out?

The woman is administered fertility drugs, typically by means of injections to trigger egg production at the beginning of the IVF treatment. An ultrasound scan is used to monitor the production of eggs in the woman. The surgeon then uses a thin needle to collect the eggs (about nine to ten) from the ovaries, while she is sedated with the help of an anesthetic. The man's sperm is collected and combined with the eggs in a culture dish. The eggs are allowed to undergo fertilization. The woman is administered progesterone to thicken the uterus lining and prepare her for pregnancy.

Of the embryos formed in the culture, one or more embryos that are the most suitable are chosen and placed in the uterus by means of a catheter. While one or two embryos should usually suffice, three embryos may be placed in the uterus in case the intended mother is aged over 40. The placement of eggs usually occurs about two or three days from the time the eggs have undergone fertilization. After around three weeks following the implantation of the embryos, a scan is carried out to see if the process has been successful and caused a pregnancy.

What are the associated success rates?

Age and fertility issues play a crucial role in determining whether or not an IVF treatment will be successful. Younger age and healthier eggs translate to better chances of success. Same goes with women who have previously conceived, they have higher odds at achieving pregnancy successfully. Here are the success rates associated with the treatment based on the age of the woman:

    • Under 35 - 32 percent
    • 35 to 37 - 28 percent
    • 38 to 39 - 21 percent
    • 40 to 42 - 14 percent
    • 43 to 44 - 5 percent
    • 45 and higher - 2 percent

IVF cost

Individual IVF cycles cost $12,400 in the US on an average according to the American Society of Reproductive Medicine. Then again the cost of the treatment can vary based on factors like the geographical location, expenses from medication, IVF cycle numbers and your insurance coverage. Cuba, Mexico, China, Thailand and Taiwan have recently grown as healthcare hotspots for their affordable IVF treatments. Couples travel to these exotic destinations for their fertility treatments. They are offered the assistance of world-trained practitioners and well-furnished medical institutions at a fraction of the cost that they would be paying in other developing countries. It also gives them a chance to relax and unwind at these destinations on their medical holiday, making it a lucrative pick!
